An East Haven man is accused of approaching people as they were walking on the boardwalk near 21 Palace Street  in West Haven on Wednesday night and trying to sell a fake gun, police said.

Police responded to the boardwalk at 7:20 p.m. after receiving a report that a man was displaying a handgun and found James Downey, 22, police said.

The gun he is accused of attempting to sell was a fake blank gun that replicated a popular model handgun, according to police.

Downey was charged with breach of peace and illegal use of a facsimile firearm.

He is due in court on Sept. 18.
