West Haven police arrested a New Britain man at the VA Hospital in West Haven after he showed up with a gun and identified himself as a police officer, according to a news release from police.

Gordon Brooks, 34, of 555 Slater Road in New Britain, entered the VA Hospital on Wednesday, saying he had an appointment with a doctor.

The VA requires law enforcement agents to turn identification and any weapon over to the VA police for security reasons.

When Brooks showed the officer a loaded .40 caliber handgun along with an ID  and badge that said he was a criminal investigator for the Army, the officer became suspicious because there were no credentials to go along with them, police said.

When police checked the ID and searched for a Connecticut pistol permit, they found neither and learned that there are several felony and misdemeanor charges out of Virginia and Florida against Brooks.

He was arrested, charged with criminal impersonation of a police officer, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying without a permit and breach of peace in the second degree, He was held on a $50,000 bond.
