Man in Critical Condition After Being Trapped by Falling Car

A Hartland man is in critical condition after becoming pinned under his car when the car jack failed, police said.

It happened just before 10:30 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Goose Green Road and Minor Lane in Barkhamsted, according to police.

Heros Wegscheider, 59, had jacked up his car to make repairs after the exhaust system failed. Police said the car jack became dislodged, sending the car toppling down, trapping Wegscheider underneath.

New Hartford fire, police and EMS officials responded to the scene. Emergency responders managed to lift the car high enough to pull Wegscheider out from underneath, police said.

EMS personnel performed CPR on Wegscheider, who was unresponsive. They were able to restore his pulse and breathing before LifeStar arrived, police said.

Wegscheider was transported to Hartford Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.

Authorities are investigating to figure out exactly what went wrong.
