A 29-year-old Ansonia man is in critical condition after what police are calling a road rage incident.

Witnesses tell police that a motorcycle driver and a Jeep driver were swerving on Route 63 and passing each other on Tuesday, then got into a heated confrontation the traffic light at Route 63 and Porter Avenue.

After arguing, Anthony Parente, the motorcyclist, pulled ahead of the Jeep. The driver, Alan Harte, sharply turned to the right and drove over the motorcycle and its operator, police said.

Harte, 66, fled and several witnesses followed him, police said. He returned to the scene of the collision just before police arrived.

Parente, 29, is in critical condition at Waterbury Hospital.

Harte has been charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless driving and evading responsibility. He was held overnight on a $175,000 bond and was arraigned on Wednesday at Waterbury Superior Court.

The Regional Team is investigating and additional charges are being considered.
