The son of Stamford’s mayor will not spend any time in the slammer for trying to rob Darien man to buy pot.

Benjamin Malloy, 22, received a 10-year suspended sentence and five years probation in Stamford Superior Court on Wednesday.

Police say the younger Malloy and two other men went to the home of a Darien man in March to buy marijuana, Malloy pulled out a BB gun and one of his companions brandished a .22-caliber pistol that fires blanks.

The man fought back and the three men fled, police said.

In a written statement, Mayor Dannel Malloy and his wife said their son has struggled with mental health and substance abuse issues. While he continues to receive treatment, they said he took responsibility for his actions and is being held accountable.

Dannel Malloy is exploring a potential run for governor.
