Brandon McGee has won the Democratic nomination for the 5th General Assembly District in a re-vote on Tuesday night.

McGee, a 28-year-old newcomer, defeated longtime political figure and union representative Leo Canty who was the party endorsed candidate from Windsor.

McGee’s camp said the unofficial vote tally was 1,094 to 942.

McGee had to wait nearly two months before being able to celebrate his victory. He and Canty tied with 774 votes apiece on August 14.

A recount ordered by the office of the Secretary of State resulted in Canty winning by one vote. McGee then filed an appeal and asked for a second recount.

The second recount resulted in McGee being awarded an additional vote and another tie between the two.

McGee will now face Republican Paul Panos in the general election in November.
