Moped Crash Kills Boy

A 9-year-old boy was killed when his moped and a pickup truck collided in East Haven Sunday afternoon.

The boy, who has not yet been identified,  was rushed to a hospital after the collision on Florence Street and pronounced dead.

The accident remains under investigation and police say no charges have been filed.

State law requires that riders of “bicycles with a helper motor” hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. The boy did not have one, according to East Haven Police.

East Haven Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Oca said witnesses reported that the 11-year-old cousin of the deceased boy was also on the bike when it crashed, the New Haven Register reports.

Witnesses said the 11-year-old was shaken up, but did not appear injured.

Florence Street resident Hannah Klein-Robbenhaar’s stepmother ran out and attempted to perform CPR on the injured boy, she told the Register.

Klein-Robbenhaar’s family placed the wooden crosses at the scene.
