More Than $10,000 Raised for Hurricane Matthew Victims

Hundreds of people made donations Monday as part of NBC Connecticut's  Hurricane Matthew disaster relief drive at three local Big Y stores.

All of the money raised will support the domestic American Red Cross response in the southeast region.

States like Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina felt the brunt of the hurricane's impact on the U.S.

Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to evacuate as Matthew moved up the east coast. Many coastal communities are dealing with devastating flooding, property damage and power outages.

A steady flow of shoppers and viewers filled donation boxes with cash and checks at the Big Y locations in Meriden, Naugatuck and Manchester from 11am until 7 p.m.

NBC CT set the ambitious goal of raising $10,000. The Red Cross says that would be enough to run one of their many emergency shelters in the southeast.

NBC CT happily reached a total of: $10,316.80 within eight hours.

If you couldn't make it to one of these locations, you can still help by donating through the Red Cross website here.

You can also donate by text, mail, or phone here.

In this Connecting You to Caring station initiative, NBC CT would like to thank everyone for their generous donations.
