Driver Hits Two Crossing Guards in Bridgeport: Officials

Two crossing guards were struck in Bridgeport on Tuesday morning, leaving one in critical condition, according to city officials.

A mother who had just dropped her daughter off at school apparently blacked out at the wheel of a 2007 Nissan Sentra traveling east on North Avenue.

Police said the driver crossed the intersection of Park Avenue and mounted the curb, striking two crossing guards stading on the sidewalk at 8:12 a.m.

The Nissan skidded about 40 feet before stopping at the North Avenue entrance and exit to People's Bank, with one crossing guard, Leonard Hunter, taking the full brunt of the car, Bridgeport officials said.

Hunter, 86, is listed in critical condition at Saint Vincent's Hospital with two broken legs and intracerebral hemorrhage, which means bleeding from the brain, police said.

The other crossing guard, Idalen Vargas, 50, suffered minor injuries because she was struck by the left side of the car. She is listed in stable conditoin at Saint Vincent's.

The 47-year-old driver remained at the scene before being transported to Bridgeport Hospital. She told police she blacked out before the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
