Several Injured in Multi-Car Crash on I-91 in Wallingford

Five people were transported to the hospital with injuries after a two-car crash on Interstate 91 north in Wallingford at about 2:39 a.m. Saturday.

The accident happened near exit 14 and closed the highway for several hours, but it reopened in the morning.

A 2005 Toyota Scion stranded in the center lane due to a previous crash on I-91 north before exit 14 when a 2009 Nissan ATS struck the back of the vehicle.

No one was ejected from either car, but there were multiple injuries. Juan Carlos, the passenger of the first car, and all occupants of the second car, including driver Jose Alberto Palacios, 24, and passengers Ileena Cividanes, 35, Gegxan Coriano-Fegueroa, 23, and Nathalie Valentin, 21 were taken to various hospitals with injuries.

The driver of the disabled car, Aldean E. Herrera, was not injured in the crash.

Ramirez is being treated at Yale-New Haven for serious injuries and Palacios was also taken there with a possible injury. Cividanes is being treated at Hartford Hospital for a serious injury and Coriano-Fegueroa is recovering from a serious injury at St. Francis Hospital.  Valentine was taken to Hartford Hospital for a possible injury.

Coriano-Fegueroa and Valentin weren't wearing seatbelts, according to state police.

The highway was "paved and dry" with light traffic and it was dark and cloudy when the crash happened, state police said.

I-91 north was closed for six hours as state police investigated. The state Department of Transportation responded to help divert traffic off exit 14.

An accident reconstruction team evaluated the scene with the help of Wallingford police, fire and EMS. State police ask anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Trooper John O'Connor at 1-203-393-4200.
