19-Year-Old Dies in Crash on I-84 in West Hartford

A 19-year-old from Windsor died this afternoon in the serious crash that shut down all of Interstate 84 eastbound in West Hartford for hours.

It happened around 4 p.m. Monday just west of exit 43 on the eastbound side. Police said Stephen Elliott, of 17 Amanda Circle in Windsor, lost control of the Honda Civic he was driving and veered into a cement barrier on the side of the highway.

The car rolled over several times and Elliott was ejected. He was transported to Hartford Hospital with extensive injuries and was pronounced dead, according to police.

The crash resulted in a traffic nightmare that spilled over into rush hour. All eastbound lanes, including the entrance ramps from Park Road and Trout Brook Drive, were closed in area of exits 42, 43 and 44.

Police reopened the highway around 7:15 p.m., shortly after the overturned Civic was towed from the scene.

Elliott would have turned 20 this week, according to police.

Witnesses are asked to contact state police at 860-534-1000.
