Name of Boat Incident Victim Released

A 55-year-old Chaplin man died on Saturday after falling off a boat and into the Housatonic River the day before.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has identified the boater as Donald Bessette.

Just before 7 p.m. on Dec. 7, Connecticut State Environmental Conservation Police responded after a 21-foot fishing vessel with three men aboard struck a piling in the Housatonic River in Shelton.

Bessette fell into the water and the two other boaters called 911 when they could not find him, according to state officials.

Emergency personnel from Shelton responded and found Bessette unresponsive in the water.

He was first transported to Griffin Hospital, Derby and later transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died on Saturday, according to DEEP.

State Environmental Conservation Police, including members of the Boating Accident Reconstruction Unit, continue to investigate the incident.  No further information is available.
