New Britain Dials Up a Rotary

The fourth phase of New Britain's plan for downtown features a traffic circle where Columbus Boulevard and Bank Street now meet awkwardly.

Thursday night at city hall people can find out more about the roundabout.

"All's I can think is if it's safe, you know?" said Peter Charette.

The sculpture would be moved to the center of the traffic circle. Columbus Boulevard and Bank Street would no longer meet at a point. Instead drivers would have to yield to traffic in the roundabout. Is that asking too much?

"It's hectic in this little cubicle around over here," said Carl Rodriguez, "so best advice is just to keep it the way it is, try to if anything put another stoplight over at the end of the street but I don't think the rotary's a good idea."

Rotaries and roundabouts depend on drivers yielding. Now, drivers on Bank Street are supposed to yield to the traffic coming their way on Columbus Boulevard.

Also, the bus stops on Bank Street would be moved to Columbus Boulevard, closer to the end of the CTFastrak busway in New Britain.
