New Britain Offers Incentives to Recruit Cops

Police are offering incentives to join the New Britain police force.

New Britain's police force is so short-staffed it's offering veteran cops from other towns senior officers' pay and benefits if they change departments.

The city's down to 128 officers with more set to leave.

"It’s a lot of stress on the officers and it’s not something that’s going to work in the long term," said Mayor Tim O'Brien.  "We have to fill those positions in order to make sure we can make things work."

He said the city's actually out to hire veterans and rookies.  It's more than doubled the size of the area where cops can live, to up to 60 minutes from New Britain, in order to be able to respond to emergencies.

O'Brien figured New Britain would be hiring more than 50 officers to fill its department.
