New Haven Mayor to Meet With Staff About Police Chief

The meeting comes after reports of alleged disruptive behavior and the union voted no confidence in the chief.

The mayor of New Haven will be meeting with staff today about the police chief and it comes after the police union voted no confidence in Police Chief Dean Esserman and reports that he allegedly berated a waitress and caused a disruption at a New Haven restaurant.

The New Haven Independent reports that the incident at the restaurant happened on Friday night.

NBC Connecticut reached out to the mayor’s office on Sunday and they said Harp plans to meet with aides about the chief, but did not comment on the allegations about the restaurant incident.

When asked earlier about the no confidence vote from 80 percent of the voting members of the police union, Mayor Toni Harp praised Esserman’s performance as chief.

She also said the union is in ongoing contract talks and that historically tense negotiations could have contributed to the no confidence vote.

The mayor is the only city official who has the authority to discipline or remove the chief from his position.
