New Haven Police Investigate Basketball Court Shooting

New Haven police are investigating a shooting at basketball courts on Franklin Street early Tuesday morning.

New Haven resident Ocktable Jones, also known as Octable Tyrell Jones, 39, of New Haven, was transported to an area hospital for surgery due to a gunshot wound in his lower back.

Police responded to the 183 Franklin St. courts at 2:30 a.m. after a 911 call reporting gunshots in the area.

Jones, a convicted felon, attempted to discard a gun holster on his waist while being taken to the ambulance, according to police. He has a criminal history of incidents including "assault with a firearm and drug offences," police said.

Jones was uncooperative with police and refused to speak to officers, police said.

Police have not identified a suspect or indicated how many people might be involved.

The New Haven Police Department's Major Crimes Division and Bureau of Investigation also responded to interview witnesses and gather evidence.

Police ask witnesses or anyone with information on the "shootings" to contact the detective unit at 203-946-6304. Callers may remain anonymous.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
