New Haven Ranked Third Best Pizza City in U.S.

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore, as the old song goes. And TripAdvisor reviewers love New Haven pizza, earning the Connecticut city as the third best city to get pizza at in the country.

Chicago, known for its deep dish pizza, was named the best place in the U.S. for pizza, with its most notable pizzerias identified as Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder, Lou Malnati's Pizzeria - River North and Giordano's.

New York City, another popular pizza metropolis, was ranked second, with "must-try pizzerias" like Juliana's Pizza, Keste and John's Pizzeria.

Which city was next on the list? New Haven, Connecticut! The city ranked third in the country, with Frank Pepe Napoletana, Modern Apizza and Bru Rm at BAR recommended as "must-try" pizza places.

Pepe's Pizza also was ranked ninth in the entire U.S. for best pizza restaurant. The pizzeria, which opened in 1925, "pizzeria originated the New Haven-style apizza—a thin, coal-fired crust topped with tomato sauce (without cheese), oregano, and a sprinkling of pecorino Romano," according to TripAdvisor. A signature item at the restaurant is the white clam pizza.

“No matter how long the line seems it moves pretty quick and is worth the wait," a TripAdvisor reviewer said. "After filling ourselves to the brim we decided to order one to go to eat at home later that night."

Pepe's also recently opened another location in West Hartford on New Britain Avenue.

The rankings were determined based on the quality of the reviews on TripAdvisor, the quantity of reviews and the "ratio of pizza restaurants and reviews compared to all restaurants for that city."

As for the best pizza restaurants in the country, TripAdvisor took into account the quality and quantity of reviews.

"Pizza restaurants were identified as those having a majority of reviews mentioning pizza, a minimum of 500 reviews, and at least 10 percent of reviews mentioning 'best pizza,'" according to TripAdvisor.

Reviews posted within the past year were given the most weight.
