The New London City Council’s Finance Committee is debating on whether they will cut police jobs as part of a near $1 million proposed reduction to the 2012-13 city budget.
The Day reports that a $250,000 cut to the police department was included in the proposed cuts to the budget. The committee proposed $950,000 total cuts.
The Day reports that if the cut is approved, the police department would be reduced to 81 officers. Last year, the department employed 96 officers.
Last week, city resident rejected a referendum that would have increased taxes by 7.5-percent while keeping all current police jobs.
The reductions proposed by the committee will decrease that percentage to around 5-percent.
