Newborn Girl Left at Hospital

Her umbilical cord was still attached, officials said.

A newborn baby girl was dropped off at Midstate Medical Center early Monday morning and her umbilical cord was still attached, police said.

A 15-year-old girl gave birth between midnight and 2 a.m., according to staff. She gave the baby to a woman she knew and said she could not care for the little girl, officials said.

The woman brought the baby to Meriden Medical Center around 4 a.m. on Monday.

The baby is healthy and weights 8 pounds, 12 ounces, according to police.

The Safe Haven Act allows a parent to voluntarily give up custody of an infant, who is 30 days old or younger, to the nursing staff of an emergency room and the parent will not be subject to arrest for abandonment.

After the parent gives up custody, the Department of Children and Families who will take immediate custody of the infant and develop a plan of permanent care for the child.

DCF is then required by law to notify both parents of its intent to keep custody of the infant and to seek termination of parental rights.

Police said there is no reason at this time to treat this matter as a criminal investigation because the child is in very good health and there were no signs of abuse.

Meriden Police said they are concerned for the mother of this baby girl and would encourage her to seek medical aid if needed.
