The DOT will hold off on opening up bidding on the next phase of the plan to build a new bridge across the Quinnipiac River in New Haven.

Bids set to do out for the new Pearl Harbor Bridge over the Quinnipiac River will be put off until next spring, officials from the state Department of Transportation said Monday.

Work on the foundations is going on right now and the next phase of construction cannot start until this work is finished, so DOT said it makes more sense to delay the bidding until the current construction work is finished.

At the same time, officials said, an opportunity will be provided to wait for better economic times.

However, State Senator Donald DeFronzo, co-chairman of the Transportation Committee, said delays of this type send a message that may cause citizens to lose confidence in the state's ability to follow through on big projects.

Agencies representing engineers and contractors said they worry if there will be enough state work to them in business.
