No Foul Play Found in Youth Jail Death

What killed a teenager at a youth jail in Cheshire this week remains a mystery and state police say they haven't found any signs of foul play so far.

On Monday, Shaquan Welfare, 17, of Norwalk, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Manson Youth Institution.

The medical examiner's office said on Thursday that autopsy results were inconclusive and toxicology test results could take several weeks.

Welfare was being held on undisclosed misdemeanor charges.

Welfare was shot twice in separate incidents in Norwalk in January and February, the Hour of Norwalk reports.

Welfare was struck in the leg by a stray bullet on Jan. 16 and suffered buckshot injuries to his face an arm in a drive-by shooting on Feb. 17, the newspaper reports.
