Voters in West Haven have elected Nancy Rossi to be their new mayor, according to her opponent and incumbent mayor, Ed O'Brien said on Tuesday night.

"The residents of West Haven- they are giving me a chance and I will do good by them," Rossi said.

In September, the former city council member Rossi defeated incumbent O’Brien by a razor-thin margin in the Democratic primary by only 136 votes.

O'Brien's name was not on Tuesday's ballot and the former mayor relied on write-in votes.

The incumbent mayor showed up to Rossi's campaign headquarters to congratulate her on winning his job.

"I’m sorry to say the voters spoke and we were not successful," O'Brien said.

During the primary, Rossi, a certified CPA, said she wants to balance West Haven’s budget.

In addition, Rossi said she supports the renovations to West Haven High School, but she has concerns about the funding.

As for public safety, Rossi said she’d like to see more community policing.
