President Barack Obama has declared a "first stage" federal emergency in Connecticut after the powerful October storm.

Gov. Dannel Malloy said commodities are coming into the state on Tuesday. The governor will meet with the federal energy department at 11 a.m. and will give a briefing at 11:30 a.m.

He sent a letter to the White House early Sunday and has received word that Obama declared a "first stage" emergency declaration

The October snow that fell through most of Saturday and into Sunday dropped as much as 22 inches of snow in parts of Connecticut, snapping trees and knocking down power lines. More than 820,000 customers were without power as of Sunday afternoon, many without heat. It could be a week or more before power is restored to everyone, according to Jeff Butler, Connecticut Light & Power CEO.
