Bridgeport police are investigating a shooting involving one of their own officers on Wednesday afternoon.

Shot were fired outside the Greene Homes housing complex on Washington Avenue around 1 p.m., police said.

Officer Ned Love responded to the scene, and was confronted by a man with a gun, Police Chief Joseph Gaudett Jr. said.

Officer Love ordered Armando Gonzalez, 21, of Bridgeport, to drop the gun, but Gonzalez instead raised the gun at the officer, the Chief said.

Love fired at Gonzalez, hitting him in the leg, according to police.

Police said Gonzalez apparently had shot another man, whose name has not been released. That person was in surgery Wednesday evening and is in stable condition.

Gonzalez was treated for non-life threatening injuries at a city hospital and charged with crimes including gun possession by a convicted felon.

The state's attorney was investigating the shooting. Chief Gaudett called that a normal practice in officer-involved shootings. Officer Love was placed on administrative leave.
