A tanker truck carrying 2,300 gallons of waste oil overturned and spilled its load in Newtown.
Clean up crews worked into the late night hours Thursday excavating oil-polluted dirt between the entrance and exit ramps near the exit 11 in Newtown.
Police say a tanker truck carrying waste motor oil crashed around 4pm, spilling its 2,300 gallon load.
“Waste oil as the name implies is not a pure oil. It’s not a regular oil. It does have a different impact to the environment and that’s what we’re trying to prevent,” said John Aceto, Emergency Response Coordinator.
Police say the truck was on its way to Bridgeport when the driver lost control of the rig. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The DEP and EPA stayed on scene and worked to contain as much of the oil as possible.
“This was one of the easiest spills to contain. We weren’t chasing it into a waterway or beyond,” said Aceto.
Crews are expected to be on scene for several hours.
