Seized Old Saybrook Dogs Available for Adoption

Several of the 13 dogs are puppies, just days old.

On Thursday, Old Saybrook officials removed 13 dogs found living in what police described as squalor in a home on Ford Street.

On Sunday, people interested in adopting these animals waited in line at Old Saybrook Animal Control to begin the process of adopting them

Police charged Herbert Smith after going to the house for a report of dogs living in unsanitary and unsafe conditions.

There, they found pit bulls and Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Two of the dogs are older, two are 3-months old and nine were just two-days old.

The owner of the house is deceased, police said. They took Smith, a tenant of the building, into custody and charged him with 13 counts of animal cruelty.

On Friday, Smith appeared in court and a judge lowered his bond to $5,000. A public defender will represent him when he returns to court on Jan. 27.

Police said breach of peace charges filed against Smith in October are pending.

Town officials said it will take about 10 days to check on the applications and begin to send the dogs to good homes.
