One Dead in Wethersfield House Fire

An early morning house fire in Wethersfield claimed one life.

Fire officials responded to a fire at a two-story house on Glenwood Drive around 1:20 a.m.

One resident was able to escape, but the other was trapped inside.

The resident who escaped was taken to area hospital. The other person was killed, officials said.

Capt Paul Thompson says the fatality affected everyone at the scene who tried desperately to rescue the victim.

Bob Bryon, of Wethersfield, said a female escaped from his neighbor's house.

The flames were 40 to 50 feet high.

"It wasn't even like a little smoke coming out a window. It was totally intense. It was like something blew up in the house," Bryon said.

The fire was reported under control at 2:20 a.m and crews remained on the scene until 4 a.m.

Officials said the fire was heaviest near the garage. The Wethersfield fire marshal's office is investigating.
