Opening Statements in Aaron Hernandez Trial Set for Tuesday

The judge overseeing the case is expected to settle on a final pool of jurors on Friday

Barring anything unforeseen, opening statements are now set for Tuesday in the Aaron Hernandez murder trial.

The judge overseeing the murder trial of the former New England Patriots player is expected to settle on a final pool of several dozen prospective jurors on Friday. Around 50 people were in the final pool, and Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh planned to add people following questioning throughout the day.

Garsh has spent more than a week questioning potential jurors to weed out people who are biased, have a hardship, or have a valid reason to be excused. More than 1,000 people were originally called.

Lawyers from both sides are expected to have the chance on Monday to eliminate 18 people each from the final pool.

Eighteen jurors will be seated.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to killing 27-year-old semiprofessional football player Odin Lloyd in 2013.
