Package Thieves Target Residents

New Haven police are warning residents to be on the lookout for their expected holiday packages after a city man was busted stealing one from a front porch.

Jose Flores, 42, was arrested earlier this week after an alert neighbor noticed him stealing the contents of a delivery box at a home on Aner Street, according to police.

After watching Flores stuff items from the box into a plastic bag, the neighbor confronted him and chased him through nine streets until police caught him, police said.

They are now reminding residents to take precautions.

"You can actually go online with many of these companies and find out where your package is, how far along the delivery has been, and they can often pinpoint either to the morning or the afternoon when your package is supposed to be delivered," said Officer David Hartman of the New Haven Police Department.

If you won't be home when a package is expected to arrive, either call to reschedule the delivery, arrange to pick the package up in person, or ask a trusted neighbor to collect it for you, police advised.

Police are also encouraging delivery drivers who think they're being followed to call them.

While most packages make it to their intended recipients, New Haven police say they're also investigating several other similar complaints.
