People Across Connecticut Help #ClearTheShelters

People across the state have been lining up at animal shelters on this nationwide Clear the Shelters Day to bring home a new member on the family.

Annie Dendas, of Branford, adopted a pet on the shoreline.

“It would be great to finally find one,” she said.

Staff members and volunteers at participating shelters were ready for the crowds and excited about connecting animals with new families.

“When you adopt a shelter pet, it’s very important because you’re changing the life of an animal that had it hard in life,” Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn, of the East Haven Animal Shelter, said.

Lesley Simoni, a volunteer at the shelter, believes the animals know people are saving them.

“They know that they’re rescued.,” Simoni said.

Ina Dendas, of Branford, made the trip to East Haven to meet Athena.

“We adopted our last cat, so we’ll just do the same this time,” Dendas said.

Jessie Caruthers picked up Ramona the cat and said she’s excited to bring new love to her family.

“I feel great,” Caruthers said. “She tears at my heartstrings. I already love her to pieces.”

Karen Means, of Hamden, and her brother helped to clear the shelter in New Haven by bringing Pepe home.

“I think they rescue us as people more than we rescue them,” Means said.
