Some Call for Tougher Gun Laws After Deadly Louisiana Shooting

Some people are calling for tougher guns laws in response to the deadly shooting at a movie theater in Louisiana.

Outside a movie theater in Trumbull Saturday, moviegoers were met by members of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

“It’s come to the point in this country where we are really not safe anywhere. You can’t go into the theater without looking at the exit doors and wondering who is sitting behind you,” says Kara Baekey, the leader of the group’s Connecticut chapter.

In Louisiana Thursday, a lone gunman opened fire in a movie theater in Lafayette.

Two people died and nine were hurt. The gunman later killed himself.

In Trumbull, the moms wanted moviegoers to help support tougher gun laws. They want to close what they see as loopholes when it comes to background checks.

“There’s so much more we can do and we all need to raise our voices and to reach out to our legislators to tell them, enough is enough,” says Baekey.

But Scott Wilson from the Connecticut Citizens Defense League says the Louisiana shooter had passed a background check. He argues the change that is needed is the end of policies including at the movie theater which ban people from bringing in guns.

“I think that the very fact that yes it could have turned out differently if someone was carrying a firearm, either if this person even attempted to try to do what he did or in and of itself served as a deterrent from him going in there and attempting it,” says Wilson.

Both of Connecticut’s senators released statements on Friday in response to the shooting.

They both called on Congress to act to help prevent this from happening again.
