An 18-year-old Hamden man has died after falling 200 feet from a cliff at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden on Sunday afternoon, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Tobias Engel, 18, of Hamden, was hiking alone on the tower trail, officials said.

He was the son of Len Engel, an English professor at Quinnipiac University.

A female heard Tobias fall, saw him on the ground and called 911.

LifeStar medical helicopter was called, but an ambulance responded to the scene first and transported Engel to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday night.

"The university community was saddened to learn of the death of Tobias Engel, the son of Professor Len Engel, following a fall Sunday at Sleeping Giant State Park," Lynn Bushnell, vice president for public affairs at Quinnipiac, said. "Our condolences go out to Professor Engel and his family during this very difficult time."
