Police Activity Delays Watertown Schools

Watertown schools were delayed by 90 minutes because of police activity in the 1100 block of Main Street.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Thursday, Watertown police received a call reporting an armed individual behind a commercial building on Main Street in Watertown, adjacent to Watertown Fire Headquarters.

Police were told that the person was armed and prepared to engage police officers in a violent confrontation, so on-duty officers immediately secured the area where they believed the person was hiding.

The regional SWAT team was activated, and additional officers, as well as hostage negotiators, arrived on the scene.

After police identified the man, they attempted to begin communications with him.  Around 6 a.m., hostage negotiators from the Waterbury Police Department began speaking with the person.  Shortly before 7 a.m., he surrendered and was taken into police custody.

Police are investigating.  No charges have been filed against the individual at this time.

The man's name hasn't been released yet.
