Police, Animal Control, DEEP Monitor Bear Sightings in Rocky Hill

Officials from multiple agencies are monitoring bear sightings in Rocky Hill on Saturday.

Police in Rocky Hill say they received several reports of bear sightings in the west end of town. The bear was seen in different locations including Maple Street, Candle Lite Drive and France Street, but was most recently seen near Cold Spring Road.

Officers from the Rocky Hill Police Department and members of Rocky Hill Animal Control were called to the areas and saw the bear themselves. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) was also advised of the sightings. Rocky Hill Animal Control and DEEP say they are continuing to monitor the area.

According to officials, residents should be aware of their surroundings and are reminded that bears are attracted to garbage, pet food, compost piles, fruit trees and birdfeeders around houses.

Home owners should take necessary steps to make sure homes and yards do not have items that would attract bears, police say.

Anyone who sees a bear in Rocky Hill is encouraged to contact Rocky Hill Police at (860) 258-7640 or DEEP at (860) 424-3333.
