Charges are filed in the death of an Ashford boy at a gun show.

Pelham Police Chief Edward Fleury owns the COP Firearms & Training, which sponsored the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo last month at the Westfield Sportsman's Club. The club and two other men, Carl Guiffre of Hartford, and Domenico Spano, of New Milford, also were indicted on involuntary manslaughter charges. It was not immediately clear the role Guiffre and Spano played in the boy's death.

Prosecutor William Bennett told reporters:  "It appears that there were many other minors who were also furnished machine guns.  The event was advertised as having no age limits.  And it was the intent, it was the apparent intent of Fleury and the club that minors would be shooting machine guns."

But state law prohibits the furnishing of a machine gun to any person under the age of 18, said prosecutor Bennett.  "The event was advertised as no age limit.  Minors would be allowed to shoot and that's clearly in violation of the law."

Christopher Bizilj, of Ashford, lost control of the 9mm micro submachine gun as it recoiled while he was firing at a pumpkin. He was attending the show with his older brother and father, who was standing 10 feet behind the boy preparing to take a photograph when the child fired the weapon.

His father was not charged, said prosecutor Bennett.  However, Bennett said he will be punished "every day for the rest of his life."

Fleury and the club also were indicted on four counts each of furnishing a machine gun to a minor.  Fleury, the club, Guiffre and Spano did not immediately return calls for comment.

The machine gun shoot drew hundreds of people to the sporting club's 375-acre compound. An advertisement said it would include machine gun demonstrations and rentals and free handgun lessons.

"It's all legal & fun -- No permits or licenses required!!!!" reads the ad, posted on the club's Web site.  "You will be accompanied to the firing line with a Certified Instructor to guide you. But You Are In Control -- "FULL AUTO ROCK & ROLL," the ad said.  The ad also said children under 16 would be admitted free, and both adults and children were offered free .22-caliber pistol and rifle shooting.

Christopher's father, Charles Bizilj, has said his son had experience firing handguns and rifles but the gun show was his first time with an automatic weapon. A certified instructor was with the boy at the time.

  • Jim Lilja Friday, Dec 5 at 11:18 AM FLAG COMMENT I thind the father should also be charged, who in there right mind would give an ouzi to an 8 year old. Plus this man is a doctor, I would not want this man operating on me, it's apparent he has no inteligence at all.
  • ridiculous Friday, Dec 5 at 9:06 AM FLAG COMMENT no matter what a stand up guy they think the dad is he should still have to pay for stupidity, you are supposed to protect your children ...for having such a high position in the medical field where is the common sense here ,I know 5 year olds with more than that...
  • Anonymous Friday, Dec 5 at 7:00 AM FLAG COMMENT The father wasn't charged, are you kidding me? Any parent who gives his/her 8yr old child an uzi to shoot with a 15 yr old "supervising" should be charged with at least, risk of injury. I hope the father was able to grab his camera in time and get a couple of shots before his son died. Just another case of, if your a promenant doctor, lawyer or polictical figure in town, you get to walk away from the law. This case isn't much ... MORE >
  • Dan from NY Friday, Dec 5 at 3:36 AM FLAG COMMENT I was 8 yrs old when I received my first single shot .22 rifle from my father. But long before that happy day of my youth, I was raised to respect a weapon for the tool that it is. A tool that can enrich your life and perhaps even save it. But also as with any other tool, you must respect it and use it safely or the exact opposite results will likely occur. My late father was a Certified NRA Safety Instructor, so I was taught ... • Jes Thursday, Dec 4 at 10:50 PM FLAG COMMENT I am very sorry for all parties. Sometimes we want things for children that they aren't ready for. It was recoil the boy was not yet strong enough to handle, but it is so many other things in life, too. Sometimes we "arm" children with knowledge thinking it will protect them from harm, but it produces a harm of its own that cannot be recovered from. I feel for the boy's family, and for everyone who knew him, as well as the f ... MORE >
