Middlebury Police tracked down a driver who they said hit a a motorcyclist then fled the scene on Friday night.
David Winckler, 52 of Naugatuck, was charged with second-degree assault, evading responsibility and making an unsafe left turn after police tracked him down at a local restaurant.
Middlebury emergency crews responded to a report of a crash at Straits Turnpike and Woodside Avenue around 8:30 p.m. and found Angelo Ligi, 60, who had been ejected from a 1995 Harley Davidson motorcycle and was severely injured.
After investigating, police discovered that Ligi had been riding the motorcycle southbound on the Straits Turnpike when a 1998 Toyota Camry going northbound turned left across the lane, causing Ligi to lose control.
The bike flipped over and Ligi was ejected. The car then fled the scene.
Ligi was transported to Waterbury Hospital. He is listed in serious condition.
Police tracked down the Toyota Camry at a senior housing complex near the site of the incident.
Two K-9 units were used to track a scent leading from the car into a wooded area.
One of the K-9 units also tracked the scent to a local restaurant, Maggie McFly’s. Winckler was found standing at the bar. He was apprehended and held on $25,000 bail.
