1 Dead, 1 Badly Burned in Manchester Crash

A driver is dead and a passenger severely burned after their car struck a utility pole on East Center Street in Manchester Thursday night, according to police.

Police said the Nissan Maxima was traveling northbound on East Center Street around 8:30 p.m. when it left the roadway and collided with a pole at the intersection of East Center and Holl streets.

The Nissan was crushed, trapping the driver inside. Police said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, identified only as an adult male, was taken to Hartford Hospital and later flown via LifeStar to the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit, according to police.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims.

Although the crash is still under investigation, police said speed and driver impairment may have contributed to the incident.

East Center Street was closed for hours while authorities responded to the scene.
