Name of Motorcyclist Killed in West Haven Released

A 21-year-old New Haven man was killed in a crash in West Haven.

West Haven Police are investigating a third fatal crash at the same intersection in the past two months. 

Michael Cotto, 21, of New Haven, was killed in a crash at Captain Thomas Boulevard and Dyke Street at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, police said.

According to police, Cotto and another motorcyclist were traveling West on Captain Thomas Boulevard and collided with the pickup that was traveling south on Dyke Street and was exiting onto Captain Thomas Boulevard.

Police the other motorcyclist and driver of a pickup were also injured and transported to the scene for medical assistance are area hospitals. Conditions have not been released.

This is not the first time a tragic accident has occurred there. Two motorcycle drivers were killed at that intersection in the past few weeks.

On July 17, Michael Finch, 21, died when his bike collided with a car.

On July 31, Ronald Rome, 50, died when his bike crashed on what people said is a very busy section of pavement.

"I think it's very, very busy. I used to live in West Haven and I come down here all the time, and there's a lot of traffic, a lot of motorcycles and young kids," said Jill Mclnnis of Orange.

Residents in the area also said it can be a dangerous stretch of roadway when people aren't careful.

"You see people running stop signs and red lights and that's going to fatally hurt somebody who has the right of way," said Gabriel Petrecca.

West Haven Mayor John Picard said the police department is still investigating the fatal crashes and is also researching past accidents.

The police department's major accident unit is investigating the most recent crash.
