Police Investigate Spike in Car Break-Ins in Greater Hartford Area

Police are investigating the spike of car thefts and break-ins across the greater Hartford area. 

After West Hartford Police Department said it had received around 20 reports of car break-ins and three car thefts during the overnight hours this week, more departments of come forward.

Manchester, Hartford, New Britain, Glastonbury, East Hartford and West Hartford police departments are working together to combat the increase of car theft and break-ins in the area. 

“It is absolutely a regional problem and we’re taking our share this week," Lt. Eric Rocheleau said. "This past couple weeks unfortunately.”

In the last month, 40 cars in West Hartford have been broken into and 12 cars were stolen. 

For New Britain, 120 cars have been stolen and 70 larceny thefts since June 1. 

Police are urging residents to lock the doors to their vehicles; never leave keys, fobs or valet keys inside their motor vehicles; remove valuables from vehicles; and avoid leaving vehicles running while unattended.

If you can park inside a garage, do so and call police if you see anything suspicious on your street.

Police also urge residents to check exterior lights on your home to assure proper working condition and pointed in the correct direction.
