Police Investigate Near West Hartford School

Police said the incident happened near, but not at the school.

West Hartford police are investigating after a man jumped from the window of a vacant house near the Morley School on Thursday morning.

The owner of a house listed for sale on Cumberland Road went to the house on Thursday morning to shovel the driveway and noticed that someone had tried to force the back door open, police said.

When police responded, they found an open window, a broken handle on the water main access panel and several ceiling tiles that had been removed, revealing the copper piping.

Police said the homeowner might have scared off a burglar and the person jumped out the second-floor window and drove off.

For half an hour, police searched the area and were in contact with officials from the nearby school to keep them informed of what was going on.

Police said copper thieves target vacant homes because they can steal the metal without being detected.

“We encourage (people) to keep eyes out for neighbors’ homes. … If people see anything they think is suspicious or out of the ordinary, call us and well come take a look,” Sgt. Mike Perruccio, of West Hartford police, said.

The man who jumped from the house window was wearing a long tan jacket, a neighbor told police, but they do not have any further description.

Police called local hospitals to see if anyone had sought treatment for a fall, but no one had, police said.
