A man told police he was shot in the hand in the parking lot of a post office in Milford.

Milford police are investigating a shooting that the victim said happened in a post office parking lot early Saturday morning.

The victim said he got out of his automobile in the parking lot of the U.S. Post Office 548 Naugatuck Ave. just after 3:31 a.m. because of an equipment malfunction and a man with a semiautomatic handgun rushed at him, police said.

There was a struggle and the victim was shot once in his left hand, police said.

The attacker ran away through the parking lots and headed toward Lenox Avenue.

The victim drove himself to Bridgeport Hospital and hospital staff called police to report the shooting.

The victim said the attacker is around 5-feet-10 and has a husky build. The man is probably in his 30s, police said, and was wearing a green shirt.

The victim said he did not have any additional details because he was focused on the gun.

Police searched the area where the shooting was reported and did not find any evidence confirming a crime scene in that area, police said.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the disturbance or heard what they thought to be a gunshot in that area overnight to call Detective Sergeant Youd at (203) 783-4728 or email dyoud@ci.milford.ct.us.
