Ansonia Tax Collector on Paid Leave as Police Investigate What Happened to Money

Ansonia's tax collector is on administrative as police investigate how hundreds of taxpayer dollars disappeared.

While no money is presently missing or unaccounted for, $700 was discovered to be unaccounted for on Dec. 22 and it was brought to the mayor's attention on Dec. 28.

Tammy Blackwell has been placed on paid leave as police investigate some "irregularities regarding the accounting of funds," Mayor David Cassetti said.

"If it's $2 or $2,000, it's taxpayer's money," the mayor said. "You've got to make sure you're looking out for their best interests."

He said employees discovered money was missing and then found it in another part of the office.

Security camera footage revealed some “irregularities,” Cassetti said, and he requested help from police on Tuesday.

The investigation is expected to take around two and a half weeks and the tax collector's office remains open.

"We're not sweeping anything under the rug," Cassetti said. "We're following the right protocol and this is the right protocol of bringing in the police."

"Any irregularities in the city's finances will be aggressively and thoroughly reviewed by independent professionals," Ansonia's corporation counsel, John Marini, said in a statement.
