State police arrested the 33-year-old man Thursday who was shot by New Britain police officers after a chase.
Police responded to a call reporting shots fired in the area of 172 Glen Street in New Britain at 8:42 a.m. on Tuesday and determined that shots were fired, but no one was hurt.
As police were at the scene, the suspect, Jose Torres, of Greenwoo Street in New Britain, drove back to the scene, police said.
Officers tried to stop Torres, but he sped off, lost control of his car, crashed on Corbin Avenue and ran away.
Police soon caught up with him in the backyard of 350 Lincoln Street, police said, and that is where police shot him.
"The suspect was armed and ignored repeated commands to drop his weapon," Chief James Wardwell said.
Torres was brought to a nearby trauma hospital to undergo surgery after the shooting. He was arrested in his hospital bed on Thursday, police said.
State police and the New Britain State's Attorney are investigating because of New Britain police involvement.
The special operations unit was brought in and three New Britain schools -- Northend Elementary, at 160 Bassett Street, Louis P. Slade Middle School, at 183 Steele Street, and Lincoln Elementary School, at 145 Steele Street -- were locked down briefly during the incident on Tuesday.
Torres is charged with first-degree reckless endagerment, criminal possession of a firearm, interfering with police and carrying a pistol without a permit. He is being held on $75,000 bond.
