Man Shot in Armed Robbery Outside New Haven Bar

A man is recovering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the stomach as a group tried to rob him and his friend while they were leaving a New Haven restaurant early Monday morning.

Two men approached Herlindo Hamenez Martinez, of New Haven, when he and his friend were exiting the Tora's restaurant bar near the corner of Ferry and Lombard streets, police said. At least one of the men was armed with a handgun. They marched Martinez and his friend toward two other accomplices waiting around the corner on Chatham Street, police said. At least one of those men had another handgun.

One of the men shot Martinez in the stomach and his friend escaped being shot when he ran off.

It's unclear if anything was stolen.

The victim's injuries aren't life-threatening.

The robbers were between 5-foot-9 and 6 feet tall.

No ballistic evidence was discovered at the scene.

A police investigation is underway on Ferry Street in New Haven.

The nature of the incident is unknown.
