Police Make DUI Arrest in Fatal Crash

Police charge a man with driving under the influence after a crash that killed a woman.

Police have arrested an Old Saybrook man accused of driving under the influence during a crash that killed a woman on Sunday.

Police responded to a crash on private property on the VFW Highway on Sunday at 7:18 p.m. on Sunday.

John Shepard, 42, of 288 Essex Road in Old Saybrook, was driving and, Leah Coleman, 49, of the same address, was the passenger, police said.        
  
Police performed medical care on Coleman at the scene and an Old Saybrook ambulance brought her to Middlesex Medical Center Shoreline in Essex, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Shepard was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Old Saybrook Police Department for processing.

He was later released on bond and is due in court on July 29.
