4-Month-Old Baby, 15-Year-Old Mom Found Safe

A Massachusetts baby reported as missing and endangered was turned over to authorities Tuesday, hours before his teen mother was also found.

State police said 4-month-old Jacob Van Voorhis was placed into the care of the Department of Children and Families in Springfield by a member of his mother's biological family on Tuesday.

He was turned over unharmed after police reported his mother, 15-year-old Shantel Van Voorhis, left his ear infection medication behind at DARE Family Services in Newburyport, where they had been staying, just before 2:30 a.m. on Monday. Police said she also left behind her son's diaper bag, that the boy was on a special soy formula and that it was unclear whether she had a car seat for him.

Hours after the boy's return, Newburyport authorities confirmed Shantel Van Voorhis had also been found in Springfield. She was taken into DCF custody, as well.

A gray 1998 Honda CRV that was also being sought in connection with the ongoing search was found at a Springfield address associated with Shantel Van Voorhis' family on Tuesday, state police said.

Police previously said the Honda CRV, which had been seen Monday near DARE Family Services, may have been driven by Jonathan Heredia.
