Police Shoot Attacking Pit Bull

Three officers were forced to shoot and kill a pit bull after it attacked another dog Sunday morning.

New Haven police shot and killed a pit bull after it viciously attacked another dog being walked by its owner, police said.

Stunned neighbors looked on as Sally Bradstreet's 12-year-old collie mix, Max, was mauled to death Sunday morning.

Bradstreet, 65, was walking her dog when the frenzied canine approached.

"I had the cane and I kept trying to hit the dog, but he got his ear first and then he dragged him," Bradstreet said.

When New Haven police arrived at Sherman Avenue and Chapel Street, they found that the pit bull had attacked the other dog's face.

According to police spokesman Officer David Hartman, police moved the crowd of more than 30 onlookers back to a safe distance before firing several shots, ultimately killing the pit bull.

NHPD Animal Control Officers responded and removed the dogs. The pit bull did not have a collar with tags, but police are looking for the owner.

Some neighbors were upset that police did not use a stun gun on the pit bull.

Police said the dog would have been stunned for five seconds and come up with "blood lust" and go crazy in an area where people were around.
