Police ID Officer, Man Who Died After Police-Involved Shooting in Thomaston

A Thomaston police officer shot and killed a 27-year-old armed man Sunday evening.

Officers from the Thomaston Police Department responded to a disturbance call at 700 High Street Extension around 7 p.m. and encountered a man with a knife, according to state police,

State police have identified the man as Daniel Reyes, of Thomaston, and said he approached the officers and ignored their orders to stop.

Police said 32-year-old Richard Galpin, a five-year veteran of the department, opened fire, shooting Reyes, who was then transported to Waterbury Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Galpin was not injured.

Detectives from the State Police Major Crimes Division and the State's Attorney's Office are investigating the shooting. The chief medical examiner is working to determine the official cause of Reyes' death.
