Children Held Hostage in New Haven

An armed man barricaded himself inside a home on Orchard St. with five children inside.

A little girl shared her frightening story on Tuesday night, after she was allegedly held hostage inside her New Haven home.

Police said they tried pulling over a suspect on Tuesday to question him about a felony investigation, but he took off.  That’s when he allegedly ran into that residence at 586 Orchard Street and put everyone inside in a panic.

“I was scared; this never happened…ever,” said nine year old Nyquasia Allen Moye.  “I thought I was going to die.”

Moye says the man opened up her apartment door around 5 p.m. on Tuesday night and found her standing in the hallway.

“I think I was going to die. He said ‘Come here, come here’ and then I started to run,” Moye said.

Once she ran, she said the man picked her up and carried her and a friend upstairs. Then he broke into another apartment.

That’s where he allegedly held them and three other kids against their will.  A woman happened to be inside and claimed he tried giving her money to stay here, but she told him to get out.

“Then I looked out the neighbors window and saw police,” Moye said.

Police negotiated with the suspect for a few minutes until he surrendered and the kids were free.

“I was crying,” Moye explained.

Some parents at the home said they were sitting right on the porch when that suspect ran through the front door, but he was so fast they couldn’t stop him.

They said they didn’t know he was with their kids.

“It looked like he was banging on the door and saying something. I knew something was wrong,” one mother said.

When the children finally came downstairs, parents realized what they went through.

“That was scary. That's like something you see on television,” another parent added.

It was scary for the kids too, who questioned if they would make it out alive.

“That's why I’m going to go to my auntie’s house. I don’t want to stay here,” Moye said.

New Haven Police arrested the suspect but did not release his name.  They have not said what investigation they wanted to question him about when they initially tried to pull him over.
