Police Investigate Several Car Break-Ins in East Windsor, Berlin, Vernon

Police in East Windsor, Vernon and Berlin are investigating a series of car thefts and thefts from vehicles.

A resident of Prospect Hill Drive in East Windsor called police at 5 a.m. on Tuesday to report a person was going through his vehicle. When the resident yelled from his doorstep and threw his coffee mug at him, the burglar fled.

The resident was able to give police a description of the car the burglar was in, which was reported stolen out of Cheshire, and police found the person on Route 140. However, when officers tried to stop the driver, the person sped off on Interstate 91 South and police ended the pursuit.

A Cricket Road resident also reached out to police to report a vehicle stolen. The keys were left in that vehicle and the doors were unlocked, police said.

Police said there were several car break-ins throughout East Windsor/Broad Brook, as well as surrounding towns, and most were during the early morning hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Berlin police are also investigating an ongoing rash of car breaks and thefts that have occurred during late-night hours over the past month and said it is a regional problem for several suburban communities in the area.

Berlin police said thieves rummaged through 27 cars and stole one during the nights of June 11 and 12 and June 18 and 19.

On the night of June 17, police arrested three New Britain boys who were caught burglarizing cars, police said, and the suspects have been referred to the Juvenile Justice System.

Berlin police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles and not to leave anything of value in them at night.

Vernon police said the town has had 11 car thefts in June and 20 break-ins. On average, one stolen car is reported a month.

Police said North Park Street, Echo Drive White Street, Daly Circle Morrison Street, Ledgecrest apartments on Brooklyn Street and Weststar Apartments on West St are among some of the locations where thefts are occurring.

Suspects are targeting all types of cars: new or old. Most thefts are from suspects getting into unlocked cars or cars with keys left inside, some right off peoples' driveways.

Last week, Vernon police made two arrested in connection with one stolen car. The suspects were both 17 years old and the car was found crashed.
